Mineral Makeup Tips

Why Use Mineral Makeup?

Pure mineral makeup has no preservatives or harmful chemicals. It is safe for your face and skin type. However, it should be noted that as with any type of body product, you should test a small portion on your skin before using it all over. Although it is not common to have a reaction to mineral makeup, for your safety we ask that you test it before using it in large areas.

There are different combinations of minerals: Micas, Titanium Dioxide, and Zinc Oxide and others. These mineral combinations help us to create foundations, blushes, veils and multi-purpose powders in different shades, shimmers and luminousity.

Tips for Applying Mineral Makeup:

* Cleanse and Moisturize: You should wash and moisturize your face prior to applying any type of makeup. We recommend not applying foundation to freshly moisturized or washed face due to a possibility of having a dark, cakey completed look - instead allow your face to dry for a fresh, natural look.

* Brush Application: The most important tool in mineral makeup application is your brush. The wrong brush can result in your makeup not spreading well across your face and too much makeup in the wrong places making you look unnatural.

* Coverage Problems: Too much product on your brush can give you a very unnatural look. Mineral makeup is very concentrated and due to no fillers added, you only need a small amount. Tap a small amount to your sifter jar cap or to a white tissue, and swirl your brush around; Tap off excess before applying.

* Buff It In - NO!: No, No, NO!  We cannot stress this enough!!  DO NOT BUFF ANYTHING! - not even mineral cosmetics - onto your skin.  (Telling you to "Buff it in" is NOT one of the best mineral makeup tips.)

Why?

When you buff, you are simply forcing the product into your pores.  Additionally, buffing can cause microscopic scrapes and abrasions to your skin, allowing bacteria to get in and helps aid in breakouts and irritation.

Instead of attempting the "buff, buff, buff," take a gentler approach by using a downward sweeping motion to apply your mineral foundation.  A Kabuki brush is not the best way to do this, as the Kabuki will give you a much heavier application - unless you prefer a heavier coverage, avoid using a Kabuki brush.  Instead, try a soft "fluffy" brush such as a regular foundation brush.

So, a recap of application:

  1. Do NOT Buff!
  2. Stay away from a Kabuki brush - unless you prefer a heavy coverage.
  3. Use a simple downward brush stroke for easy application, such as a regular foundation brush.

Now, it's time for your very first mineral cosmetic application...

Mineral makeup is different from other makeup.  You only need to start with a little, because it will go a long, long way.  Keep adding layers until you reach your desired coverage.

1. Start with a clean, moisturized face.  Be sure your moisturizer has absorbed before you apply yoru minerals.  If your moisturizer has not absorbed, the minerals may clump and spread unevenly.

2. Primer - this is for oily skin.  Primer is colorless and will absorb more oil throughout the day.  Simply apply the primer the same way you would your mineral foundation.

3. Foundation - Tap a small amount of foundation into the lid by turning your jar over, tap the bottom with your finger, and carefully open (works well because of our sifter lids).  Now, swirl your brush in the foundation you have tapped into the lid.  Next, tap your brush against the side of the lid to tap off any excess foundation back into the lid.  Apply it to your face in short, feathery downward strokes.  Do NOT "buff" the minerals into your skin; instead lightly dust across your face.

Remember, "buffing" forces the minerals into your pores that can promote breakouts and enlarged pores.

-->Do you prefer liquid foundation?  No problem!  Simply add a dab of water to the foundation (mix on a small paper plate - not in the lid as this will get moisture into the remainder of your product), and mix well.  This is called "foiling."  Keep adding water or powder until you've reached your desired consistency.  Use a flocked sponge, a brush or even your finger and apply the same way as mentioned above.

* Mix It Up!: Finding the right mineral makeup shade is the key to the perfect look. If your mineral foundation disappears when applied to your face, then you have found your perfect match. If your color is too dark or too light, consider combining the shade with a lighter or darker shade to find your personal match. It is not uncommon to mix and match shades for a perfect fit when needed.
